10 Summer Dont's
1. Big Floral Prints
Don’t be shy with this trend – it’s all about being bold and daring. The floral prints are big and in your face, while still remaining feminine. If you have a small frame, try not to go overboard. You can still wear big prints, but try to tone it down a bit in order to balance out the look.
2. Faded and Ripped Denim
Avoid looking too much like a heavy-metal fan by staying feminine by keeping the slashes subtle and by pairing the jeans with a pair of great heels and a feminine blouse. Light-coloured jeans tend to make your legs and hips look larger than what they really are so if you have some junk in your trunk, rather stick to darker shades of denim.
3. Sheer
Avoid tight-fitting sheers that reveal too much. The look you are going for is elegance and should still leave something to the imagination. Choose items that contain subtle sheer details, or if the entire item (i.e. blouse) is sheer, wear the appropriate clothing or camisole underneath.
4. Tuxedo Style
You don’t want to look too masculine in this trend, so try to incorporate something flirty and feminine with it, such as a floral dress or tiered top with your tux jacket. Don’t forget the killer heels!
To avoid looking like you just stepped out of the eighties, team your jacket with jeans to dress it down a little.
Don’t over-accessorise with this look – keep it simple and clean-looking.
5. Lingerie-Inspired
This look is merely inspired by lingerie and you should not actually look like you’re wearing your lingerie out the house. Avoid anything vampish or over-the-top and instead rather opt for elegant, subtle details such as pretty bows, silk camisoles and silk film silk tops with lace detail.
6. Accentuated Shoulders
Avoid over-whelming shoulder-padded suits. This style is about clean lines and elegant silhouettes – not something that looks like you could poke someone’s eye out!
7. Bold Colour
Don’t be shy with choosing colours inspired from a crayon box – the bolder and brighter the better! Experiment with colours suit your skin tone, hair and eye colour the best. It may be tempting to pair a bright top with black bottoms, but try teaming it with a pair of white jeans or pants for ultimate brightness.
8. Shine On
Don’t just stick to metallic accessories this season. Instead, opt for soft gold or silver lurex (metallic yarns) or lace pieces that have just the right amount of shine for daytime. When combined with white, it creates a fresh, beachy look. For evening, beaded short dresses that sparkle or subdued metallic tops look ultra glamorous.
9. Tribal / Safari
Don’t go overboard with this trend as you will end up looking like you’re going to a costume party. Instead, pair something safari chic with an item more modern. I.e. a tribal print dress with metallic sandals, a khaki safari jacket with white jeans etc.
10. Volume
Don’t pair volume with volume – or you’ll risk looking bigger than what you really are. If you’re wearing a voluminous skirt, wear a well-fitted blouse or jacket to balance out the look.
